FAQs about Mother’s Day

Is Mother’s Day a Bank Holiday?

Nope, Mother’s Day is not a bank holiday or a public holiday. Business opening hours tend to be the same as every other Sunday – although you are likely to find pubs and restaurants a LOT busier than usual.

Is Mother’s Day the same around the world?

No, the UK stick to a church related date, whereas the US celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

Australia and New Zealand also celebrate Mother’s Day on the same day as the US.

The History of Mother’s Day

Anna Jarvis, a social activist and community organiser is said to have started Mother’s Day in the US. In 1908, she held a memorial church service to celebrate her Mother, three years after her death.

As the years progressed, Anna Jarvis became increasingly disillusioned with how commercial Mother’s Day had become and even tried to stop it.

Ironically, when Anna Jarvis died, her funeral was paid for by greetings cards companies who had profited hugely thanks to Mother’s Day.
