I will always stay vocal about how important it is to get your children involved in extra curricular activities. I know that we have been very lucky that our girls have been very successful in their chosen sports and really found their sport but there are several other benefits why extra curricular activities are so important for children.

These activities, which take place outside the regular school curriculum, play a crucial role in shaping a child’s character, skills, and overall wellbeing. In this blog post, we will explore the numerous benefits that extracurricular activities offer to children.
Holistic Development
Participating in extracurricular activities provides children with a well-rounded education, according to this independent school in Surrey. These activities go beyond the confines of traditional subjects and help develop various aspects of a child’s personality.
Whether it’s joining a sports team, learning a musical instrument, or engaging in art classes, each activity contributes to a child’s physical, emotional, and social development.
Academic Improvement
Contrary to the misconception that extracurricular activities might distract children from their studies, research has shown that they can enhance academic performance. Participation in activities like debate clubs, science clubs, or language clubs can improve cognitive skills, time management, and problem solving abilities.
These skills are transferable to the academic setting, leading to improved grades and a better understanding of classroom materials. We considered whether our eldest should reduce her commitment to training during GCSEs but decided to be led by her at the time. We actually found that she focussed more during her study time as she knew that she had training to go afterwards.
Social Skills and Teamwork
Extracurricular activities provide an excellent platform for children to interact with their peers in a less formal setting. Whether it’s playing on a sports team, participating in drama club, or joining a scouting group, children learn valuable social skills such as communication, cooperation, and teamwork. These skills are essential for success in both personal and professional aspects of life.
Wherever my girls go, they are likely to find someone that they know through their many extra curricular activities. If they don’t, they soon will as they have developed the skills to be able to strike up a conversation with anyone.

Building Confidence and Self-Esteem
Success in extracurricular activities, whether big or small, contributes significantly to a child’s confidence and self-esteem. The sense of accomplishment gained from mastering a new skill, winning a game, or performing on stage fosters a positive self-image.
This newfound confidence often spills over into other areas of a child’s life, helping them tackle challenges with resilience and determination.
Time Management and Discipline
Extracurricular activities teach children the importance of managing their time effectively. Balancing school, homework, and various activities requires planning and discipline. These skills are invaluable as children grow older and face more complex responsibilities.
Learning to prioritise and allocate time wisely helps them develop habits that can lead to success in their academic and professional endeavours.
Exploration of Interests
Extracurricular activities allow children to explore their interests and passions beyond the standard curriculum. Whether it’s discovering a love for painting, coding, or playing a musical instrument, these activities provide an opportunity for self-discovery. This exploration can shape a child’s future career choices and hobbies, providing a sense of purpose and direction.
In conclusion, extracurricular activities offer a myriad of benefits for children, contributing to their overall development and wellbeing. As parents and educators, fostering an environment that encourages participation in such activities can help mould resilient, confident, and well-rounded individuals.
While academic achievement is undoubtedly important, let’s not underestimate the power of a diverse and enriching extracurricular experience in shaping the future leaders and contributors of our society.
