Heritage Week for 2024 falls between the 6th to 15th September with hundreds of Heritage Open Days scheduled to take place across the North West. This is a great way to discover new places to visit in the North West and often a chance to see behind the scenes how things work. You have the choice of tour, workshops and family-friendly activities, all celebrating local culture, history and heritage. Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. Running for 10 days every September, this year sees the 30th anniversary of this event.
Most events are completely free. There are often special child friendly events taking place alongside more traditional events. A rare chance to get to speak to the experts in many locations.

A guided walk round a traditional orchard, pick/taste heritage varieties of apple, pear and plum. Visitors can bring their own apples to crush in a reconstructed 18th century cider press, make juice or cider to take away.
You can chat and swap advice about planting, tree care, bees, orchard crafts, whittling, basket making and orchard frivolities, from dances round the trees to quaffing fresh apple juice.

St Margaret’s Church, Wray Estate, Ambleside
See inside the Grade II listed building and former place of worship normally closed to visitors. The church isn’t owned by the National Trust and has been opened with permission from the Diocese of Carlisle. This may be the last year that we open the church, so be sure to make the most of it while you can.
