Any parent or guardian will know the struggle of keeping busy kids entertained for more than a few minutes at a time – especially with activities that actually have a positive impact on their physical growth and mental development. Our children always loved being on the go and older kids looking for exciting challenges, so outdoor play equipment was invaluable in keeping our girls and their friends entertained.

There are many different types of play equipment available to choose from, many of which can be combined together in various ways to create larger climbing frames or play centres.
However, one type of playground equipment that’s often overlooked is monkey bars. Consisting of a frame with a horizontal ladder, children swing from one rung to the next like a monkey swinging from branch to branch in the jungle.
Hanging from the bars and swinging between them can be more of a physical challenge for kids, but they can also be a great fitness tool for older teens and adults – which is why you’ll see monkey bars in outdoor gyms and obstacle courses, too.
Offering the chance to improve muscle strength, coordination, balance, and more, monkey bars are a must-have climbing frame feature for many reasons.
Here are just some of the ways that playing on monkey bars can boost child development.
1) Physical strength
Monkey bars have numerous physical health benefits. Navigating the bars engages multiple muscle groups and helps to strengthen them – including the arms, shoulders, back, and core.
Hanging, swinging, and tucking the legs up towards the abdomen while moving between rungs helps to tone and develop various parts of the body, whilst also improving posture.
Maintaining proper alignment of the spine and back is key, especially considering how much time kids and teens spend sitting in front of computers or TVs, or hunching over phones or tablets!
2) Fine motor skills
While gross motor skills are necessary for larger muscle movements like running, fine motor skills are needed to coordinate smaller movements like holding a pen to write or using utensils to eat.
Using monkey bars requires a child to hold onto the rungs firmly with their hands and support their entire body weight, which develops the strength of their grip and the dexterity of their fingers. The memory of tingling palms from hanging on my friend’s climbing frame as a child, is one of my core memories.
Judging the distance between bars and adjusting movements accordingly also helps to improve spatial awareness and the ability to sense the body’s position in space (proprioception).

3) Self-confidence
Mastering the monkey bars can become a crucial step in any child’s personal development. Providing a higher level of difficulty than most play equipment, they encourage safe risk-taking.
While failing at the monkey bars can be frustrating, learning to swing across successfully creates a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem and teaching kids to persevere.
Learning the value of patience and working hard will help children to feel more confident in exploring their abilities, building resilience and helping them to face challenges with a positive attitude.
4) Stress relief
Just as adults get stressed out about various problems in everyday life, and exercise is often recommended to relieve anxiety in these cases, the same applies for children of any age.
Combining the fun of playing with physical exercise, monkey bars offer a way to blow off some steam that helps to relieve physical tension and distract from mental and emotional worries. In fact, I often used to send my girls out into the garden to hang around on ours to relieve the stress of the day.
We are big believers that physical effort can also help kids to sleep better, improving their concentration and academic performance at school.
5) Problem-solving
There are a variety of cognitive advantages that come with learning to use monkey bars, from spatial reasoning and hand-eye coordination to risk assessment and critical thinking.
These are all transferable skills that can set children up for success in other areas of their lives, be it schoolwork, sports and athletics, or any new activity or hobby they might decide to try.
Not only does this develop problem-solving skills, but the increased blood flow spurred by physical exercise also boosts brain function, helping kids to focus on whatever task they’re presented with.
6) Socialisation
While multiple children shouldn’t use the monkey bars all at once to avoid the risk of accidental collisions, kids can still share the experience and learn to play together.
Whether it’s siblings, friends, or other playmates, children must learn to communicate with each other to take turns on the play equipment, and help anyone who might struggle to use it.
We have fabulous memories of summer days in the garden with friends and family.
7) Creativity
Aside from physical stimulation and mental regulation, children need to be inspired creatively, as well – and the versatile play afforded by monkey bars is a great way to spark their imagination.
Kids can make up various scenarios to explain why they can’t touch the ground with their feet, whether they’re pretending to cross a jungle canyon or playing the classic ‘floor is lava’ game.
Imaginary games can enhance language skills and storytelling for younger kids, but teens can play games with monkey bars, too – from timing each other to inventing different rules for how to move.
Are monkey bars worth it?
As you’ve learned from the list of benefits above, monkey bars provide a unique opportunity for children of all ages to develop a range of physical, cognitive, and emotional skills.
Kids can focus on the fun side of outdoor play that challenges them, while enjoying the improved strength, confidence, concentration, and more that can result from regularly using monkey bars.
Put simply, monkey bars tick all the boxes for play equipment that addresses almost every aspect of a child’s developmental needs, from adventurous exercise to social bonding.
Now you know how fantastic they can be for children and teens, why not invest in your own set of monkey bars for your garden? That way, your kids can enjoy the health advantages of monkey bars without having to leave the comfort of your home!
